4What arrived was Rokinon- updated review
By DOGLETMOM
Just updating this. The lever on the top of the tripod for adjusting the angle failed after I had been using this at 1300mm for just a little while. I have ordered a more heavy duty tripod but still satisfied with the lens. This was a little odd. Doing research it seemed that all these low priced large lenses were basically the same thing (brand?). I ordered what I thought was the Samyang as it came with a tripod, an absolute must as these lenses are very heavy. What arrived was a Rokinon. It looked exactly like the picture of the Samyang so I did not care. The T Ring for connecting to my camera was for Minolta/Sony and is actually the best fitting/best quality of all the T rings I have found so it connected very firmly to my Sony A35.After pointing it at various things for practice I finally set it up outside and took some moon photos at 1300mm this afternoon. they were great. I used a cable shutter release to make sure everything stayed as still as possible.I would post a photo if there was an option here.It does take a long time to get it focused just right manually but if you want it for taking moon or very long distance photos and have patience with the focusing I would recommend it.Obviously it is not for professionals given the low price and I have seen it panned in reviews by serious photography reviewers so I was a bit worried that it may not work for me but it is fun. My moon pictures were better than I expected. Once I loaded to my computer I could clearly see craters without having to photoshop to improve or sharpen the shots. They came out smaller but better than when I try attaching my camera to my telescope. Even thought the moon looks clearer through the telescope, the photos are easier to take with this lens and actually clearer although not as big. I am going to try the 2x teleconverter and see what the quality is like with that but even without that the magnification is great.I am no expert but it really is for taking photos of things a long ways off as there is no real depth of field but for taking pictures basically at infinity this should not matter.Bird watching will require great patience as you really have to just focus on the intended spot and wait as everything is manual and takes a little time.I did find however that using the long distance scene option on my camera rather than trying to manually set the iso etc. as suggested actually provided the better photos as I took my shots just before it got too dark and the moon got too bright to use this option.
