Product Description

Nikon  AF-S VR NIKKOR 200MM F/2G IF-ED Lens    The AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED lens was specially developed for use with both Nikon digital and film SLR cameras. An important addition to the range of Nikkor ED lenses, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED is crafted from Super ED glass - a significant new material that is more resilient than typical fluorite lenses and offers class-above optical qualities with exceptional consistency even at large apertures. With an ideal combination of Vibration Reduction (VR) technology and fast f/2.0 aperture, the AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED is designed to offer photographers razor sharp images in the most demanding situations. The AF-S VR Nikkor 200mm f/2G IF-ED has a myriad of applications for all kinds of photographers. Many will find uses for its expressive quality of emphasizing subjects in portraits by rendering background elements completely out of focus, while others will use it for its large aperture, superb clarity and immense potential with VR technology for shooting in low light conditions or from moving platforms. This new lens lives up to Nikon's heritage as one of the finest optical manufacturing companies in the world. Super-ED Glass for Superb Clarity - Nikon's Super ED glass elements excel at correcting chromatic aberration and eliminating secondary spectrum to produce outstanding image resolution and clarity. While the optical properties of this new glass closely resemble those of fluorite, Super ED glass is more resilient to rapid temperature changes (thermal shock) and not as susceptible to cracking as the crystal structure of fluorite. Super ED glass also boasts a higher refractive index than fluorite, making it highly capable of correcting aberrations other than chromatic aberration. It also demonstrates less change in optical characteristics than fluorite when exposed to severe temperature variance, ensuring consistent performance even under extremely harsh shooti...

5Worth every pound (of the 2.9kg) - feedbacks vs the 300mm f/2.8
By Shawn Chen
It weights as much as the af-s 300mm f/2.8 (gen 1) but is about 2.5" shorter in length. The primary lens is the same size, and it's a chore to lug around. 10lbs to be exact with a D700 and a battery grip. The personality of the lens, e.g. sharpness, bokeh, is similar to the 105mm DC Nikkor f/2, except it has faster focus, able to shoot a couple of stops faster with VR, and has a 200mm focal length. It's sharp wide open at f/2 and insanely sharp from 2.8 and beyond under non-challenging lighting conditions. The quality of the optics makes it somewhat more bearable to lug around, but it's dimension is unconventional--stubby and shorter than the other Nikon super telephotos. Ironically, it doesn't balance as well as the af-s 300mm f/2.8 for me. Without a tripod or monopod, I tend to shoot with the camera on my shoulder and arm extended. The 'stubby' 200mm f/2 is harder to grip and balance, but optically it creates the same creamy bokeh as the 300mm albeit a tad sharper. To the very point, it's more comfortable to balance the camera with a 300mm on my shoulder and arm (w/o tripod/monopod) than the 200mm.I seldom shoot sports, instead I shoot a lot of candid shots of people, particularly children, and the 200mm is absolutely a marvel. Once you're a believer, you can't settle for anything less. Few lens I own can get the level of sharpness I like wide open, and the 200mm f/2g is the sharpest of the lot. (85mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, 60mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2, 300mm f/4, 300mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8)

5Best of the best
By Felix Gumby
I purchased this lens in order to take advantage of the 2.0 f-stop in horribly lit hs gymnasiums. This lens paired with my D2Hs is outstanding. It has to be the best volleyball lens in existence. The only drawback is that it weighs a TON (better start doing your push-ups!). But, when you see the shots it produces, the weight is no longer a problem. I used a 70-200VR prior to this purchase, and it is/was a great lens, but it isn't even in the 200's class. If you shoot basketball or volleyball this is a great lens. . . if you can afford it. If you can't, . . well, you only need one kidney.Update, I have now paired this lens with a D3. . . OUTSTANDING.

5PERHAPS KING OF PORTRAIT LENS?
By P. SU
I believe you own this lens for portraits. 200mm is not a nice range for sports or wildlife, often too short, unless it's for tight indoor sports like volleyball badminton, table tennis or squash etc. Its lightning fast AF is certainly good for sports. Way faster than the 70-200mm VR II.Like everyone is saying, it's very heavy and hard to carry. The tripod foot is too short, so you cannot grab the lens by the foot as your fingers cant get in there (unlike the 300mm f/2.8 VR and 400mm f/2.8 VR). And it's so heavy (for its size that is) that Nikon does not recommend you holding the lens simply from the camera lens mount, meaning you have to constantly hold it with another hand. It's very fat so it's difficult for me to get a good grip on it, unless I have enormous hands like a basketball player. So when I am holding camera in 1 hand and the lens in another, I have no hands left to press some of the buttons on the camera which requires 2 hands, or if you have a shoe mount flash attached. Often I find myself supporting the lens from the neck to free up 2nd hand, but that gets straining after 5 minutes. It's also quite easy to accidentally rotate the focus ring when you try to hold such heavy and short lens, ending up with slight off focus pictures. The new version adds nano coating to 1 element (check the specs yourself) and 1 more stop in VR performance, but it cost almost twice as much for the new version. I am happy the value of this lens has dropped to more affordable range. 6k for the version II would not be possible for me price wise. Now the good stuff: it's super sharp straight from 2.0. It has the ability to separate subject from background very easily. Depending on your distance to the subject and the relative background distance, the background might be so creamy such that it feels like a big Muslim paper. VR works fine, but make sure your shutter speed is good because getting super sharp pictures while hand holding this lens is a challenge. You get blurry edges very easily, if you pair it up with a 36MP D800 such as mine. It's hard to see at anything less than full resolution, but definitely noticeable if you pixel peep. Its built quality is on a very high level, huge glass and full metal. The hood provides plenty of protection. If you wish to have polarizing filter, you have to buy it separately for the rear mount. One thing to watch out for. I notice this lens lose a lot of contrast if you shoot against light (or allow flare to appear in the lens). Perhaps this is due to the fat diameter allowing plenty of light to enter and create internal reflections in between those huge glass elements. This lens is definitely above the class of the 70-200mm VR II or the 85 1.4G. It has similar creamy bokeh as the 85 1.4G, but subject separation is about 2~3 times better. It focuses a lot faster than the 70-200mm, and is a good 30% sharper if you pixel peep. However, the 70-200 and 85 1.4G are already very good and versatile. Only you can decide if the pros outweighs the cons. Currently, you can buy a used 70-200 and 85 1.4G for the price of one such lens.Update Jan 2013This lens is meant to be shot wide open. There's hardly any weakness in this lens, that's why it's expensive. I recently own the version II as well, and I cannot tell any difference in image quality easily. One noticeable difference is the VR II in low light shooting. I recently shot a couple of engagement sessions with the sun almost behind the sea, and the VR II got me a lot of keepers at 1/40s, 200mm ISO400 hand held, about 40 ft away from the couple. I was walking with shaky hands too in strong ocean breeze, and I am pleasantly surprised. Even though the 70-200 is a lot more versatile, not that much faster, a lot lighter and cheaper, but the images produced at 200mm is very different. The 200mm f/2 is incredibly sharp, yet feels soft, the images have an unique look to them which I cant quite explain, perhaps it's the compression of the image or the contrast.
